A contemporary of De Kooning, Gorky and Motherwell who were his friends, David Smith is one of the greatest sculptors of 20th century America. This well-documented monograph, the first of such scope, contains important essays by Dominique Fourcade, Éric de Chassey, Ann Hindry, Carmen Giménez and Rosalind E. Krauss, and exemplary documentary material on each work presented. Fifty of his most important and spectacular sculptures are accompanied by a judicious selection of preparatory sketches. The study also contains a biography and an anthology of the principal texts on David Smith, and it naturally gives a prominent place to the writings of the artist himself, as well as his own photographic work – of his works and studio in Bolton Landing. The emphasis is put on the most significant moments in the career of this sculptor/welder/metalworker/riveter fascinated by colour that is given such a major place in his work, and on his serial working method.
